Game of Thrones DVD Sales Off to Fast Start

Sales of the recently released DVD of Game of Thrones Season 1 are flying off the shelves, with the 350,000 copies sold so far a record for any HBO series.

The 350,000 units sold in the first week after the March 6 release eclipsed sales of other hit HBO series including The Sopranos, Sex and the City, and True Blood. The news comes on the heels of the release of the wildly popular trailer for Season 2 (which debuts on April 1), pointing to what could be huge ratings for the upcoming season premier.

So far the series has done an excellent job of capitalizing on the millions of fans of the Game of Thrones books, with the series holding largely true to the books and involving author George R.R. Martin in many different ways to ensure that what’s seen on the screen is authentic and engaging.

Game of Thrones Season 1 Released on DVD

It’s a good time to be a Game of Thrones fan, with Season 1 recently released on DVD and the premier of Season 2 just a few weeks away on April 1 when HBO airs “The North Remembers” to kick off the second season.

Not only does the DVD contain all ten episodes from the first season but also plenty of extras, as far as a motion comic, a Guide To Weesteros, and hours and hours of extra footage and commentary not previously seen on the HBO episodes.

As far as the looming season premier for Season 2, Game of Thrones’ executive producer D.B. Weiss recently did an interview with the LA Times in which he discusses the DVD release as well as what to expect from the sophomore season and some of the challenges.

Below are just a few highlights from the interview as well as a taste of what to look forward to in Season 2:

Are you still in post-production on the second season?

Yes, we are in post-production and getting it all ready as quickly as we can for the drop-dead dates when they pry it out of our cold, dead hands. We’ve got a couple of episodes locked and done and in the can, but we still have some work to do on the back end.

One of the more impressive features from the DVD set is a motion comic explaining the various religious beliefs in this world. Do you oversee that as well as the series?

We were definitely very excited and involved with all aspects of DVD production. Credit for [the motion comic] goes to Bryan Cogman, our story editor and writer who also wrote those, and Will Simpson, who did all the artwork. He also does our storyboards and is a respected and noted comic artist in his own right. And the whole DVD team who wrangled the cast. We were very pleased with the concept and how beautifully it was executed.

How much downtime do you have after finishing Season 2 before you start writing Season 3?

That would be zero. Zero minutes and zero seconds. By the way, I should point out that we don’t have a greenlit Season 3 yet. It’s not a foregone conclusion in our minds. But the show needs to operate on the 52-week, maybe 51-week-a-year schedule to get finished.

Game of Thrones fans now have a lot more options when it comes to purchasing merchandise online, with Entertainment Earth (one of the largest online retailers of action figures and memorabilia from movies and television shows) now stocking items such as Game of Thrones coffee mugs, coaster sets, magnets, and much more.

Options were limited in the past when it came to buying Game of Thrones items but the surging popularity of the show and the looming second season means that more items will likely be available in the near future.

The Game of Thrones Season 1 DVD is also now available, with the Blu-Ray edition containing not only the 10 episodes from Season 1 but also hours and hours of other bonus content, as well as a insanely detailed Complete Guide to Westeros that will appeal to casual and hardcore fans alike.

Game of Thrones returns to HBO for its second season with the episode “The North Remembers” on April 1, much to the delight of Thrones fans around the world.

Thoughts on Season 1

With the first season of HBO’s Game of Thrones wrapped up, now’s a great time to take a step back and look at the first ten episodes as a whole.

Game of Thrones is a bit unique as it’s based on books, so many fans come to the television series with some pretty high expectations and knowledge of many of the twists and turns that can be a complete shock to viewers who have never read the books.

That’s both a good and a bad thing, and a recipe for some fans to hate any movie or television series solely based on the fact that it’s “not like the books”.

A lot of fans of the A Song of Fire and Ice series (of which A Game of Thrones is the first book) by George R.R. Martin had mixed feelings when HBO announced its plans for A Game of Thrones; it’s great to see your favorite books on the television screen but, you know, it’s HBO, and who knows what the result might be.

I think we’ve got an answer as to what the result is: surprisingly freaking good.

Executive producers and writers David Benioff and D. B. Weiss have definitely done their homework, and it’s not so much that they’re faithful to scenes and action in the book but that they “get” the characters and empathize for them, just like all us fans do.

The casting and acting is really what carried Season 1 of Game of Thrones, and why it’s off to a successful start with viewers and critics alike. The acting is amazing nearly across the board and many scenes come across as almost a stage play, with the drama unfolding with each and every verbal parry and riposte.

The setting also comes off as refreshingly realistic, with the right mix of sparseness and reality as well as ratcheting up the effects for the scenes that matter, such as making the Wall the breathtaking hulking beast that it should be.

That’s not to say that Season 1 is perfect; far from it, as a lot of corners were cut with the Dothraki horde (which came across as almost a cheesy Western with the same villains riding through the screen over and over to appear to be a larger force) and Viserys and Daenerys were largely caricatures of their characters in the books, with no real depth at all.

But all in all many fans of the books found themselves giddy with glee as the season progressed; not only was it not the (cue Comic Book Guy voice) “worst adaptation ever”, but it was awfully damn good television in its own right, with it seemingly taking forever for Sunday to roll around with another new episode.

Season 1 Episode 10: Fire and Blood

The news of Ned’s death spreads all over the Seven Kingdoms which has an affect on all the members of the Stark family.

The North secedes from the Seven Kingdoms and proclaim Robb as their King.

With Jaime captured by the Starks and Robert’s brothers challenging Joffrey’s claim to the throne, Tywin assigns Tyrion as Hand of the King to keep Joffrey and Cersei in check.

Jon attempts to desert to avenge his father but his friends convince him to stay, and joins the Night’s Watch in an expedition beyond the Wall.

Daenerys learns to her sorrow that her unborn son died and her husband Drogo has been left in vegetative state due to Mirri’s magic.

Unable to bear it, Daenerys ends her husband’s life and has his body burn on a pyre along with her dragon eggs and Mirri. Daenerys walks into pyre, but comes out unharmed with three baby dragons.

Season 1 Episode 9: Baelor

As the Stark and Lannister armies prepare for their first battle against each other, Tyrion leads his barbarian allies into battle while

Robb and Catelyn make a deal with Lord Frey to help them in their war.

With Drogo dying from his infected wound, Daenerys goes to desperate measures to save her husband’s life by using Mirri’s blood magic, much to the Dothrakis’ horror.

Aemon reveals his identity as a Targaryen, and the price of loyalty, to Jon, who worries about events outside of the Wall.

Ned makes a deal with the Lannisters by making a false confession and accepting Joffrey as the rightful King in order to save his daughters’ lives; but Joffrey has him executed regardless.

Season 1 Episode 8: The Pointy End

As the Lannisters press their advantage over the Starks, Robb rallies his family’s allies to war.

Sansa pleads to Joffrey for her father’s life while Ned, still captive in the dungeons, finds an unexpected ally in Lord Varys.

Season 1 Episode 7: You Win or You Die

Ned confronts Cersei about the truth of Jon Arryn’s death as the wounded Robert makes preparation for his succession. Jon Snow takes the vows of the Night’s Watch.

Khal Drogo summons the khalasar to invade Westeros after Robert attempts to poison Daenerys.

Ned is made the regent to rule in place of Robert until his heir is of age, and brings the note confirming this to Cersei, Joffrey, and the rest of the small council.

Ned asks Littlefinger to have the City Watch on his side so he can safely remove the Lannisters from the throne, as Joffrey is not Robert’s son but Jaime’s, making Stannis Baratheon (Robert’s younger brother) the true heir.

However, Littlefinger and the city guards betray Ned and kill his men, and Littlefinger captures Ned.

Season 1 Episode 6: A Golden Crown

Viserys demands that Drogo pay him his debts or he threatens Daenerys.

Ned is left ruling the kingdom while Robert goes to hunt and learns the secret left by Jon Arynn.
